Hawthorn has been used as a medicinal remedy for over 2000 years. Europeans began using it to treat cardiovascular diseases in the 17th century. Studies conducted in the 1980s confirmed the therapeutic benefits of extracts from the leaves, flowers, and fruits of this herb.
The therapeutic effect of hawthorn is primarily due to its antioxidant properties. The Natural Factors product combines the three medicinal parts of the plant – leaves, flowers, and fruits – providing a full spectrum of flavonoids, including quercetin, rutin, hyperoside, and vitexin. The extract is standardized to 2.2% flavonoids, ensuring precise dosing. Each capsule contains 300 mg of leaf and flower extract, along with 165 mg of hawthorn fruit. The product contains no preservatives, sweeteners, gluten, or GMOs and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
A multicenter placebo-controlled study with 143 patients with class II heart failure found that taking hawthorn fruit extract, standardized to 6.4 mg of oligomeric procyanidins daily, led to significant improvements in physical endurance and reduced fatigue and shortness of breath after eight weeks.
A randomized double-blind study in patients with class II coronary insufficiency showed that taking 600 mg of hawthorn leaf and flower extract for eight weeks resulted in significant improvements in physical endurance compared to the placebo group. Patients taking hawthorn extract reported reduced fatigue and improved physical ability, while the placebo group experienced deterioration.
The hawthorn extract also helps maintain normal blood pressure levels. Studies show that patients taking hawthorn extract experience a decrease in systolic blood pressure, while the placebo group shows no significant changes. Another study in type 2 diabetes patients found that taking 1200 mg of hawthorn extract daily for 16 weeks led to a moderate but significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure. Earlier research showed a similar effect in mild hypertension after a 10-week intake of 500 mg of extract daily.
